Hello, welcome to Drea Says Product Things, my name is Andrea, and today we're going to talk about product terms that don't exist.
Somehow this happened again. Apparently, "Kanban Roadmap" is now a thing.
I actually discovered this a little while ago, but I'm gonna try to break this down in two minutes or less.
So first of all, Kanban, super high level. It's a way for you to understand work and progression of work in a way that allows your team to understand capacity, and also unblock as much of that work as possible so that you can be really, really efficient in delivering whatever it is that you're trying to do.
Your roadmap is about direction, intention, and influence.
It is there for you to be able to explain how you might be able to reach that product strategy that you've set forth.
So while your Kanban board focuses on delivery, your roadmap is gonna focus on strategy.
The only thing these two items have in common might be the fact that they have columns.
But just because they have columns doesn't mean that they work in the same way or that they even have the same intention for what your team is trying to do.
Now I'm sure you're there thinking, of course this term doesn't exist. But it wasn't just one or two product management tools that I found using this term. It was four.
Four different tools out there that are actually promoting the use of the term Kanban roadmap.
For the love of Santa Claus, I mean, no.
No.
If you're going to be building a product tool, then you have to go beyond just putting random terms together for SEO. You have the responsibility of teaching product managers how to do their best work, in the best way, with the best tools.
Meeting your SEO keyword quota should not be part of that.
If you wanna learn more about Kanban boards and roadmaps, I actually wrote a blog post about it. I'm gonna post it below, check it out.
And come again for our wisdom~
